Meta vs TikTok ads in Trinidad: small budgets

4 min readCaribbean

Facebook, Instagram or TikTok? How Meta and TikTok ads compare in Trinidad on reach, minimum budgets, setup and chat sales, and where small budgets work.

TikTok now claims a bigger adult audience in Trinidad and Tobago than Facebook or Instagram, according to each company's own ad tools. That has many small businesses asking whether to move their ad money.

For a small budget, the answer depends less on audience size and more on minimum spends, setup and how your customers like to buy. Here is how the two compare in October 2026.

Audience: both reach most adults

DataReportal collects the audience figures that Meta and TikTok publish in their ad tools. For Trinidad and Tobago at the end of 2025, they showed:

PlatformAd audienceShare of adults 18+ reached
TikTok974,000 (adults 18+)81.8%
Facebook815,000 (all ages 13+)68.3%
Instagram747,000 (all ages 13+)60.9%

Source: DataReportal, Digital 2026: Trinidad and Tobago.

Treat these as rough guides. They are the platforms' own numbers, and DataReportal warns that ad audiences do not match real user counts exactly. The useful point is that all three reach most adults in the country. Audience size alone should not decide where your money goes.

Minimum budgets: the biggest difference

TikTok sets a minimum of US$50 a day per campaign and US$20 a day per ad group, a set of ads sharing one audience (TikTok help). Running one ad group for a full month therefore costs at least about US$600.

Meta has no flat floor like that. Its minimum depends on your currency and on what you ask the ad to get, with separate minimums for views, clicks and installs (Meta developer docs). In practice, a US dollar account can usually run a Facebook or Instagram ad for a few dollars a day. Ads Manager shows the exact minimum when you set the budget.

That gap matters more here because of card limits. Most local credit cards now allow US$2,000 to US$2,500 of foreign spending a month, shared with every other foreign bill (our payments guide). A month of TikTok at its minimum could take a quarter of that.

Setup: Meta is simpler from here

Facebook and Instagram ad accounts are routinely opened and paid for from Trinidad. Neither platform offers TT dollars, so you will pay in US dollars by card (Meta currencies).

TikTok is less straightforward. Its list of countries where businesses can open ad accounts on their own does not include Trinidad and Tobago. Our TikTok setup guide covers what to check and the alternatives, including boosting posts with TikTok's in-app Promote tool.

Chat sales: Meta owns WhatsApp

Many Trinidad sales close in a chat. Meta's ads can send people straight into WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram messages, and the free WhatsApp Business app can create ads itself. Chats that start from those ads also get a free messaging window on Meta's paid WhatsApp platform (our WhatsApp post).

TikTok is built more for discovery than for closing a chat sale. People can tap through to your profile, website or messages, but the path into WhatsApp is longer. If your business runs on "DM to order," Meta usually fits more naturally.

Creative: TikTok needs video

TikTok ads are short vertical videos. Meta accepts videos too, plus photos and carousels of several images, which suits shops with a product catalogue but no video skills.

TikTok also limits music. Business accounts can only use its Commercial Music Library, so a trending soca track from your personal feed is off-limits. If you want to make video ads with AI, our step-by-step guide walks through it.

Where a small budget works

If you can spend under about US$20 a day, start with Meta. Run a simple ad that sends people to WhatsApp, use a clear photo or short video and track how many chats turn into sales.

Keep posting on TikTok without paying. When a video does well on its own, a small Promote boost can push it further without the full Ads Manager minimums.

Move to TikTok Ads Manager when you can comfortably commit around US$600 a month to one test, and you have several videos ready. Run it for at least two weeks before judging it.

What to watch

Watch whether TikTok adds Trinidad and Tobago to its self-serve list, which would make setup easier. Also watch Meta's WhatsApp charges, which now affect the cost of each chat on its paid platform.
